Resume analysis
Understand resume analysis output
Transform raw comparisons into actionable improvements that boost alignment with specific job postings.
What resume analysis delivers
Actionable alignment, not a rewrite.
- Alignment summary: a concise guidance block starting with “Your resume should …”.
- Key matches: strongest overlaps between your resume and the job using employer terminology.
- Gaps by criticality: high/medium/low blockers with one-sentence explanations.
- Improvement notes: precise, 12–28 word instructions you can act on.
Why this matters
Recruiters skim fast. Highlighting matches while removing gaps raises ATS and human signal; you get more interviews with fewer edits.
How it works under the hood
Structured inputs → LLM gap analysis prompts.
- Your resume converts to structured JSON (sections, bullets, dates, skills).
- The job posting is normalized (title, company, description, responsibilities, requirements, metadata).
- Optional knowledge-base facts add missing context.
- The model compares resume evidence with job requirements and classifies gaps by criticality (high/medium/low).
- We inject these inputs into a system+user prompt that instructs the model to output:
- alignment_summary
- key_matches[]
- remaining_gaps[] with criticality
- improvement_notes[]
Prompt guarantee
The prompt explicitly forbids writing your resume for you. It only returns guidance so you remain in control of edits.
Analyze step-by-step
Use built-in tools to act on the feedback.
- Open your uploaded resume inside CV Refinery.
- Review the analysis panel and suggested edits.
- Apply changes and save updates to lock in improvements.
Understanding gap criticality
Not all gaps are deal-breakers.
Analysis categorizes gaps by how much they impact your candidacy:
- High: Required skills, certifications, or experience explicitly stated as "must-have." Missing these typically means auto-rejection by ATS or screeners.
- Medium: Preferred qualifications or "nice-to-have" skills. Candidates without these can still succeed with strong overall fit.
- Low: Minor mismatches or areas for polish. Addressing these boosts signal but isn't critical.
Don't apply if high gaps are unfixable
If analysis shows 2+ high-criticality gaps you genuinely can't address, this role might not be the right fit. Save your energy for better-aligned opportunities.
Tips: small inputs → big gains
Evidence beats adjectives
When a gap cites missing proof, add a quantified bullet from your experience. Replace "strong communicator" with a result involving stakeholders, scale, or metrics.
Use the Facts Database
Before addressing gaps manually, check your Facts Database—you might already have relevant accomplishments from previous roles or resumes.
Keywords in context
Don't just add keywords. Weave them into existing bullets. "Led Python migration" beats a standalone "Python" in the skills list.
ATS matching explained
Analysis shows which keywords the ATS scans for. Include exact phrasing from the job description (e.g., "stakeholder management" not "worked with partners") to maximize matching.
